Marine Borers – Pholads

Pholads are marine borers from the mollusc family.  Martesia Striata (refer to photo) is a commonly found Pholad.  It is a clam-like filter feeder that burrows into submerged timber to use as a safe home.  The damage to the marine pile shown is caused by Martesia Sriata that are approximately 50mm long.  The outer ring of timber has been compromised.  This borer has been recorded as growing as large as 63mm.
